Thinking about how the media is reporting that Michelle Obama is angry or not “post racial” like her husband Barack, I got deja vu. It made me think about when I worked as a corporate auditor, and how I tried so hard to fit in by being extra friendly and positive. I am nice, but when I worked in accounting and consulting firms, I was super nice. I did favors for colleagues knowing I would get nothing back. I worked hard without complaining. Even when things were horrible and unfair, I never wanted to be the “angry black woman”. People are scared of her. Michelle Obama is not an “angry black woman”. She’s confident enough to be real, and that’s a great example for her daughters and for Black Women everywhere.

Reblogging this again because I’ve been looking at it all day, and here’s what makes the picture: It’s not the fistbump at all. It’s Michelle Obama’s eyes and what is just about to turn into a smile on Barack Obama’s face. It says almost everything about them at this point. I don’t give a shit if the president and his wife love each other, and I certainly don’t think a candidate’s family life is in any way indicative of how he’ll be as an officeholder, but strictly from the point of a photograph capturing a moment, this is one of those rare images that gives such an incredible picture of its subjects.
